Nigeria's former leader, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, has posited that the upcoming 2027 general elections will serve as a crucial indicator of the nation's democratic development. In his message commemorating Nigeria's 66th Independence Day on Thursday, Jonathan called on citizens to place high importance on fostering peace, unity, and justice. He further implored Nigerians to uphold their patriotism and unwavering dedication to the country's cohesion as the next electoral cycle approaches.

The former President remarked, “In a few months, we will enter another electoral season, a period that will test our democratic maturity. I urge all Nigerians to remain patriotic and prioritise actions that safeguard peace, unity, and justice.” Dr. Jonathan acknowledged that Nigeria has navigated various difficulties since achieving self-governance, consistently triumphing over them due to the enduring spirit of its populace. He encouraged a sustained sense of hope and solidarity among Nigerians as they strive for a more promising future.

Jonathan reflected on the nation's progress, stating, “Today, our nation marks another significant milestone in its journey of nationhood. Sixty-six years ago, we secured our independence and took our destiny into our own hands. Through the years, Nigeria has faced numerous challenges, but through our collective resilience, we have always emerged triumphant. As we reflect on this journey, let us remain steadfast in faith and hope, and continue to work in unity.” He highlighted the vast potential Nigeria possesses, contingent on effectively leveraging its rich diversity and abundant natural and human capital for sustained growth.

He specifically appealed to the younger generation of Nigerians to maintain optimism and bravery in their efforts to build a nation that ensures a flourishing future for successive generations. Jonathan conveyed, “The years ahead hold immense possibilities, provided we harness our diversity and our abundant natural and human resources to drive sustainable development. To our youth and fellow citizens, let us maintain hope, show courage, and work with faith toward a better country that guarantees a prosperous future for generations to come.”

However, the former Head of State stressed that realizing this prosperous future demands heightened accountability from leaders across all tiers of government. He implored those in leadership positions to exhibit profound patriotism and tackle the nation's pressing social and economic hurdles through selfless dedication, sound administration, and transparency. Jonathan articulated, “Yet, for this future to be realised, leadership must rise to the occasion. To leaders at all levels, this moment demands absolute responsibility and deeper patriotism. We must confront our pressing social and economic challenges by prioritising personal sacrifice, good governance, accountability, and strict adherence to the rule of law.”

Finally, Jonathan encouraged all Nigerians to uphold their commitment to national service, striving collectively to establish a peaceful, secure, and fair society. His concluding remarks were, “Let us remain dedicated, showing greater commitment and sacrifice in national service to build a truly peaceful, secure, and equitable nation for ourselves and the generations ahead.”
