Fresh Police Probe into Mohbad's Demise Gets IGP's Nod

Full Story
Reports indicate that Olatunji Disu, the Inspector-General of Police, has given his approval to a formal request from the family of the deceased musician, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, famously known as Mohbad. This petition calls for a new and thorough inquiry into the events leading to his untimely passing.
This development was made public by the family's legal counsel, Oladayo Ogungbe, in a statement released on September 29, 2026. Ogungbe clarified that the police's renewed investigative efforts are actively proceeding, irrespective of the recent dismissal of a lawsuit by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Mr. Ogungbe detailed that the Aloba family initially lodged their petition with the IGP on April 14, 2026, with official receipt at the Force Headquarters in Abuja confirmed on May 7 of the same year. He further explained that the petition highlighted several concerns regarding perceived inconsistencies in the initial investigative procedures. It specifically requested a comprehensive forensic reconstruction to ascertain the true circumstances surrounding Mohbad's demise.
Following its review, the IGP reportedly endorsed the petition, subsequently directing it to the Lagos State Police Command for prompt action. The family was later briefed that the matter had been handed over to personnel within the Special Enquiry Bureau for deeper examination. Ogungbe affirmed, stating, “The family’s representative has since been invited and has engaged with the new team of investigators assigned to the matter. The family has continued to follow up with the investigators and remained engaged with the new investigative process.”
This explanation became necessary after the Federal High Court, Abuja, on September 25, 2026, dismissed Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/363/2026. Ogungbe emphasized that this particular lawsuit was entirely distinct from the family's formal appeal to the police, clarifying it was neither initiated by the Aloba family nor carried out with their permission or endorsement. The statement further conveyed, “The Aloba Family therefore does not wish the public to conflate the dismissal of that suit with the separate investigative process already commenced pursuant to the Family’s petition to the Inspector-General of Police.”
Finally, the family appealed to the police to execute the investigation with utmost diligence, maintaining independence and professionalism throughout, ensuring all pertinent individuals and situational factors are thoroughly scrutinized.
