Full Story
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has reaffirmed his administration's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the lives and properties of all residents. In a statement released on Thursday by his Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Ebojele, the governor underscored security as his paramount responsibility, emphasizing its foundational role for agriculture, trade, investment, and all other economic pursuits.
“We have invested significantly in enhancing safety across Edo. Our efforts include reconstructing roads, modernizing schools and hospitals, and creating avenues for our vibrant youth population,” Okpebholo stated. He reiterated, “The protection of every Edo citizen, whether in urban centers or rural communities, remains my primary duty.”
The governor affirmed his government's continued collaboration with all security agencies, alongside traditional rulers and community leaders, acknowledging their crucial partnership due to their proximity to the populace and understanding of local terrains. Issuing a stern warning, Okpebholo declared, “Edo State offers no refuge for criminals,” cautioning anyone contemplating disrupting the state's tranquility.
Beyond security, Governor Okpebholo highlighted his administration's pursuit of advancements in healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, and education, all under the umbrella of the SHINE Agenda. He cited the successful reopening of numerous hospitals statewide, some of which had been defunct for nearly two decades, and the enrollment of over 600,000 individuals into the Edo State Health Insurance Scheme (EDOHIC). He also pointed out the consistent payment of salaries, noting Edo as one of the few states implementing the ₦75,000 minimum wage.
While acknowledging that “there is still much to do,” Okpebholo described the progress made as a robust foundation rather than a completed task. He lauded Edo residents for their patience, asserting, “Government exists to serve you, and I will keep listening, even when the feedback is uncomfortable.” The governor extended gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his dedication to repositioning Nigeria, describing the Renewed Hope Agenda as a vital step towards national revival, already fostering economic stability and growth.
He implored citizens to leverage the 66th Independence anniversary as an opportunity to recommit to peace and unity, stressing that genuine patriotism is reflected in how citizens interact and protect public assets. Governor Okpebholo concluded by wishing Edo people a peaceful celebration and praying for the continued advancement of both the state and the nation.
Echoing similar sentiments, Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa called on Nigerians to rekindle their faith in the country and dedicate themselves to building a stronger, more united, and prosperous nation. Idahosa's remarks, conveyed in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Friday Aghedo, commemorated Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
He characterized October 1st as a poignant reminder of the bravery and sacrifices made by the generation that secured Nigeria’s independence in 1960. The deputy governor noted Nigeria’s remarkable resilience despite facing various challenges, emphasizing that its greatest strength lies in its people and their rich diversity. He urged Nigerians to recommit to the fundamental principles of unity, peace, justice, democracy, and shared prosperity.
“Nigeria is a nation brimming with promise. While we may have encountered obstacles, our narrative is not one of failure; it is one of resilience, courage, and an unyielding resolve to forge a better country,” Idahosa stated. He added, “The Nigeria of our aspirations will not be realized by government efforts alone. It demands the patriotism, sacrifices, creativity, and commitment of every Nigerian.”
Idahosa also commended President Bola Tinubu for his initiatives to revitalize the economy and strengthen the groundwork for sustainable development, assuring that sub-national governments would continue to back the national development agenda. He reaffirmed the Gov. Monday Okpebholo-led administration’s dedication to enhancing lives in Edo through strategic investments in security, infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, and human capital development. Idahosa urged Nigerians to maintain hope in the nation, explaining that nation-building necessitates patience, sacrifice, and responsible citizenship. “Let us opt for hope over despair, unity over division, and service over selfishness. The Nigeria we desire is achievable if we collaborate and prioritize our nation's interests above our differences,” he concluded, congratulating Nigerians on the anniversary and praying for enduring peace, unity, prosperity, and progress across the federation.
