The former governor of Kano State, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, has shed light on his decision to join forces with Peter Obi in the upcoming 2027 presidential election. According to Kwankwaso, his choice to partner with Obi stems from his commitment to the nation's interest, the need for a balanced political landscape, and the pursuit of democratic change. In a recent interview, Kwankwaso asserted that certain prominent figures in Kano State, including former governors Ibrahim Shekarau and Abdullahi Ganduje, as well as the current governor, Abba Yusuf, have lost their political sway in the region. Kwankwaso, who is set to be Obi's running mate in the 2027 election, emphasized that his experience in the 2023 election helped him better understand Obi and appreciate the potential of their partnership. He noted that the decision to team up with Obi was influenced by the desire to allow the South to hold the presidency for another term, following the completion of former President Muhammadu Buhari's eight-year tenure. Kwankwaso explained that his resolve to support Obi was strengthened by the country's pressing challenges, including security concerns, declining agricultural productivity, and deteriorating infrastructure. He highlighted the economic hardship faced by farmers, particularly in Northern Nigeria, where agricultural production has become increasingly difficult and unprofitable. The former defence minister also cited the poor state of infrastructure across the country, with the exception of areas like Lagos, as a reason for his decision to join forces with Obi. Kwankwaso expressed his confidence in the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket, stating that it offers a unique combination of regional balance, competence, and credibility. He dismissed the notion that serving as vice president would be a setback for him, given his extensive political experience. Instead, Kwankwaso views his decision as a step forward, driven by a broader national interest rather than personal ambition. He emphasized that public office should be seen as an opportunity to serve, and that he is willing to serve in any capacity, from councillor to president. Kwankwaso also drew historical parallels, citing examples of leaders who have accepted positions below their expected stature, such as Sir Ahmadu Bello, who chose to remain Premier of Northern Nigeria rather than becoming Prime Minister.
