The Osun State governorship election has come to a close, with incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke emerging victorious. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, and other notable figures have extended their congratulations to the governor on his re-election. The Independent National Electoral Commission declared Adeleke, the Accord party candidate, the winner of the August 15, 2026, election, having secured 511,067 votes. His closest rival, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, garnered 444,815 votes, resulting in a winning margin of 66,252 votes for Adeleke. The African Democratic Congress candidate, Najeem Salaam, came in third with 17,180 votes. This election marks a significant milestone for Adeleke, who initially won the governorship in 2022 on the Peoples Democratic Party platform but contested his re-election on the Accord platform. Atiku Abubakar praised the people of Osun State for their large turnout despite attempts to undermine the democratic process. In a statement, Atiku said, 'The outcome of last Saturday's gubernatorial election in Osun State is an expression of the wishes of the people, which has earned Governor Adeleke his re-election.' He emphasized the importance of voter participation and vigilance in protecting the electoral process. Atiku also utilized the opportunity to criticize the ruling APC, stating that the election exposed the growing dissatisfaction with the President Bola Tinubu administration. He alleged that the heavy security presence during the election was intended to intimidate voters but commended the electorate for resisting such attempts. Atiku expressed his confidence that the APC would be defeated in the 2027 general election, citing the Osun election as a precursor. Peter Obi, in his congratulatory message, described Adeleke's re-election as a testament to the power of the people. Obi credited Adeleke's performance in office for the renewed confidence expressed by the voters. He particularly commended the young voters in Osun State for their peaceful defense of their democratic mandate. Obi emphasized that democracy becomes stronger when citizens remain conscious of their civic responsibilities and insist that their votes count. He urged Nigerians to participate actively in the electoral process and protect their votes as the 2027 general elections approach.
