High School Tragedy: Student Kills Classmate, Self in Livestreamed Philippine Attack

A harrowing incident unfolded on Tuesday at Ateneo de Zamboanga University, a private Catholic institution located in western Mindanao, Philippines. Authorities confirmed that a student fatally shot a fellow schoolmate before taking his own life, with the entire ordeal broadcast live on social media.
This marks the second school shooting in the country within a two-month period. Regional police spokeswoman, Shella Chang, provided details, stating, "What we know so far is that (the shooter) went to the classroom of our known victim. He shot the victim, and after doing that, he went up to the fifth floor and shot himself."
Interior Secretary Victor Remulla independently verified that the ninth-grade suspect had livestreamed the tragic event. The alleged shooter's Facebook account has since been deactivated. Footage, which circulated among local media, depicted a gun's barrel moving along a hallway, reminiscent of a first-person shooter video game, before being aimed into a classroom and discharged. Subsequently, uniformed students could be seen screaming and frantically seeking an exit. The number of injured individuals was not immediately clear.
In a statement, the interior ministry announced that national police are actively working to "establish the motive behind the shooting, determine the ownership and source of the firearm used, and find out how it was brought inside the school campus." The ages of both the shooter and the victim have not yet been released by the police.
Father Guillrey Andal, president of Ateneo de Zamboanga, confirmed the two fatalities, expressing the school's profound sorrow over the shooting and its commitment to cooperating with the ongoing investigation. He told reporters outside the school, "We are in the process of working with the police for us to be able to identify them, so that we can communicate first with their loved ones." Father Andal also acknowledged the "deep concern and worry" the incident had caused, adding, "Prior to this, our security team had even been preparing a simulation exercise, precisely because we understand the value to everyone — our students, our personnel — of safety."
While school shootings are uncommon in the Philippines, an attack in June at a central Philippine school resulted in the deaths of three teenage students and injuries to 20 others. In response to that earlier tragedy, Ateneo de Zamboanga, like many other schools nationwide, conducted active shooter drills last month. Despite strict regulations on legal gun ownership in the Southeast Asian nation, a substantial black market for firearms persists.
