UBEC Advocates Inclusive Education for Nigerian Children

The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has emphasized the importance of ensuring that every Nigerian child has access to quality education, regardless of their circumstances. According to Dr. Aisha Garba, the Executive Secretary of UBEC, every child deserves the opportunity to learn, develop their abilities, and reach their full potential. She made this statement during the commissioning of the newly rehabilitated Alternative High School for Girls in Agboju, Lagos State. The school's rehabilitation is part of UBEC's efforts to provide alternative learning pathways for girls and young women who have been forced to drop out of school due to various challenges such as poverty, displacement, and early marriage. Dr. Garba noted that the rehabilitation of the school is not just an infrastructure project, but an opportunity for girls and young women to return to learning and acquire useful skills. She emphasized that girls who have dropped out of school should not be seen as lost causes, and that young mothers who want to return to education should not be made to feel that their opportunity has passed. The Alternative High School for Girls is designed to provide a supportive environment where girls can restore their hope, build their confidence, and renew their future. The Federal Government, through the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative, is working to improve the quality of education, increase access, and ensure that no child is left behind. Dr. Garba commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritizing education and human capital development, and praised the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her commitment to the education and empowerment of girls and young women. The UBEC has handed over the rehabilitated school to the Lagos State Government and urged the state to sustain the investment and maintain the facilities. The commission is also working on establishing another Alternative High School for Girls in Ikorodu, which is expected to be completed soon.
