Dedicated Corps Member Equips Over 1,100 Taraba Women, Students with Life Skills

Joy Alkali, a National Youth Service Corps member currently serving in Taraba State, has successfully implemented a significant Community Development Service project, providing vocational training, literacy education, and Computer-Based Test (CBT) skills to 1,102 women and students. As part of this initiative, Alkali also presented school uniforms to thirty students of Government Day Secondary School, Howai, located in Jalingo, to enhance their access to education.
Her project, operating under the banner of the Better Tomorrow Initiative, officially commenced with an inauguration ceremony on Tuesday. This followed a three-month "Learning to Read" literacy program and a one-week intensive training focused on baking, pastry, and confectionery. During the graduation event, Alkali explained that the initiative’s core purpose was to furnish women and young individuals with practical, income-generating capabilities, thereby improving their livelihoods, fostering self-reliance, and contributing positively to the overall development of their communities.
Alkali further elaborated that her inspiration for the project stemmed from a desire to create a lasting impact beyond conventional academic settings. She stressed that the empowerment of women creates a positive ripple effect, ultimately strengthening families and entire communities. She remarked, "Today is not just about celebrating the completion of a programme; it is about celebrating hope, empowerment and a better future for our community. We believe that when a woman is empowered, her family is strengthened, her community is transformed and the nation becomes better."
Alkali encouraged all beneficiaries to diligently apply their newly acquired skills by establishing small businesses and extending mentorship to others within their respective communities. She also clarified that the donation of school uniforms to the thirty students was a direct effort to support Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State’s education policy, aiming to alleviate financial pressure on parents and boost school attendance.
The corps member extended her gratitude to the sponsors, facilitators, volunteers, and community leaders for their invaluable support, noting that the true measure of the Better Tomorrow Initiative's success lies in the number of lives it has positively influenced.
Mr. Ella Aji Williams, the NYSC Coordinator for Taraba State, lauded Alkali's dedication to a community-centred project, which he noted aligns perfectly with the objectives of the NYSC Community Development Service. Speaking through his representative, Mr. Sunday Wankari, who is the Head of Community Development Service, Williams also commended the leadership of Government Day Secondary School, Howai, and the Taraba State Government for fostering a peaceful environment that enabled corps members to successfully execute such impactful community projects.
Mr. Lafal Clement, the NYSC Local Government Inspector, characterized Alkali's initiative as an exemplary model of selfless service. He implored other corps members to undertake similar projects that directly address the specific needs of their host communities. Clement stated, "Let this be a reference point for service that truly touches lives."
Comrade Abubakar Sanusi, the Principal of Government Day Secondary School, Howai, conveyed his profound appreciation for Alkali’s contributions, emphasizing that her intervention effectively tackled crucial needs within the school. He highlighted several of her efforts, including the renovation of classroom chalkboards, the introduction of reading support and CBT training, the donation of school uniforms, and various other interventions that have significantly benefited the students.
