In a move to bolster its national defense, Russia has introduced an expanded military training program for school children between the ages of 11 and 17. According to Sergei Kravtsov, the country's education minister, the new curriculum, known as 'Fundamentals of Homeland Security and Defence', will include a minimum of 17 hours of basic military training, in addition to the existing 34 hours of coursework. The comprehensive program will cover a range of topics, including Russian military history, civil service, wartime survival, combat skills, and even the handling of firearms and grenades. Furthermore, students will receive instruction on the use of drones and will participate in field exercises. This development comes at a time when tensions between Russia and NATO are running high, with Russia recently commencing construction on a new military base near Finland's eastern border. The base, which is expected to accommodate between 4,000 and 6,000 personnel, has raised concerns about regional security, particularly in light of Russia's recent military activities. In 2024, it was reported that Russian children were being trained in nuclear attack response and protection methods, highlighting the country's emphasis on military preparedness. The new training program is set to begin in occupied Crimea as early as September, according to local reports. Military expert and former Finnish intelligence officer Marko Eklund has expressed concerns about the potential security implications of the new base, given its proximity to Finland's border with Russia. Russia's decision to enhance its military presence in the region is seen as a response to the recent expansion of NATO, which has included the membership of Sweden and Finland.
