Enugu State Intervenes as Teenager Banished Over Alleged Paternity Abuse

Full Story
The Enugu State Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development has successfully intervened to protect a 16-year-old girl who faced public banishment from her Nenwe community. This action follows grave allegations of abuse, including impregnation, reportedly involving her father. The ministry's intervention was spurred by a widely circulated video depicting the teenager and her father being forcibly escorted out of the village by local elders.
The viral footage captured community residents shouting curses at the duo, who were conspicuously adorned with palm fronds—a traditional Igbo symbol indicating an abominable act. Elders in the video declared the alleged actions a severe taboo within their cultural norms.
Reacting to the disturbing incident, Ngozi Enih, the Enugu State Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, confirmed that the ministry has secured a safe shelter for the young girl. Simultaneously, law enforcement agencies have initiated a widespread search to locate and apprehend the father implicated in the allegations.
Commissioner Enih assured the public of the state's unwavering commitment to the survivor's comprehensive welfare, prioritizing her physical health, emotional stability, and overall well-being. She also stated that the girl would receive extensive psychosocial support to aid her in processing the trauma and commencing her journey towards recovery. "No child should ever be blamed, rejected, or punished for being a victim of such abuse," Mrs. Enih firmly stated.
