Kwara Man Missing After Asa River Rescue Attempt Over N2000 Row

Full Story
A 42-year-old man, identified as Nasiru, has been reported missing following a dramatic incident in Ilorin, Kwara State. He is believed to have disappeared after plunging into the Asa River in a desperate effort to save his apprentice, Abubakar.
The tragic event unfolded under the Asa Bridge, located along Emir’s Road, where eyewitnesses reported a heated argument between Nasiru and Abubakar over a sum of N2000. As the dispute intensified, Abubakar reportedly rushed towards the riverbank and jumped into the water.
In a swift and immediate reaction, Nasiru, his master, also dived into the river, aiming to pull his apprentice to safety. While Abubakar was successfully brought out of the water, Nasiru was unfortunately carried away by the strong current and has not been seen since.
Upon receiving a distress call, the Kwara State Fire Service promptly initiated a search and rescue operation. Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, the agency's Public Relations Officer, confirmed that specialized teams were deployed to the location without delay to thoroughly search the river.
The fire service has indicated that despite ongoing efforts, Nasiru has yet to be found. However, search operations remain fully active and are being directly supervised by the Chief Fire Officer, Alabi Muhammed.
Chief Fire Officer Muhammed seized the opportunity to caution residents against entering rivers or other hazardous bodies of water during emergencies or personal conflicts. He strongly advised the public to maintain composure during disagreements, prioritize their personal safety, and rely on trained emergency personnel for dangerous rescue operations.
