Borno State Sees ISWAP Fighter's Surrender After Eight Months

In a significant development, a 25-year-old man, identified as Alhaji Ali Gambo Kanuri, has surrendered to the military in Monguno Local Government Area of Borno State. Kanuri, a native of Ngarinna village in the same local government area, had been a member of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) for about eight months. According to sources within the military, Kanuri was introduced to the terrorist group by a friend and later became disillusioned with the harsh conditions and ideology of the organisation. The difficult circumstances faced by ISWAP members, coupled with the sustained military operations against them in the North-East, are believed to have influenced Kanuri's decision to abandon the group. After navigating his way out of the terrorist-controlled area, Kanuri surrendered to troops in Monguno town and was taken into custody for further processing. The former fighter was subsequently handed over to the relevant authorities for necessary actions, in line with established procedures for individuals who voluntarily disengage from terrorist organisations. This development comes at a time when the military is maintaining pressure on Boko Haram and ISWAP elements in Borno State, with ongoing clearance and counter-terrorism operations in various parts of the North-East. The authorities have continued to encourage individuals associated with terrorist groups to surrender peacefully and undergo the established screening and rehabilitation processes.
