Jambutu DPO Under Scrutiny for Alleged Extortion, Unlawful Custody

The Adamawa State Police Command has initiated an inquiry into the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Jambutu Division following serious accusations of arbitrary arrests, illegal detentions, and demands for bail money. This development was announced on Saturday by the command's Police Public Relations Officer, Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, via a statement released on their official X handle. The command's action comes after a news report, "Adamawa Residents Demand Removal of Jambutu DPO Over Alleged Arbitrary Arrests, Bail Extortion," brought these issues to public attention.

Emphasizing the gravity of these claims, the police leadership has instructed Deputy Commissioner of Police Hamzat Tambai, who heads the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), to carry out a comprehensive and confidential probe. The official statement from the command affirmed, "The Command takes the allegations seriously and wishes to state categorically that it does not condone arbitrary arrests, unlawful detention, extortion, or any form of professional misconduct by its personnel."

In related developments, police in Enugu recently apprehended 14 individuals suspected of kidnapping, recovering various arms and ammunition. Separately, a 27-year-old was arrested in Adamawa concerning a fatal stabbing at a hotel. Additionally, regarding the #OsunDecides2026 incident, police clarified the discharge of tear gas and confirmed the arrest of an officer involved.

The command seized the opportunity to reaffirm that bail remains free of charge, issuing a stern warning to its personnel against soliciting funds from citizens for the purpose of granting bail. "Bail is free, and no police officer is authorised to demand or receive money from members of the public as a condition for granting bail," the statement explicitly declared.

Furthermore, the police appealed to the public to come forward with any pertinent information or evidence that could aid the ongoing investigation into the DPO's conduct. Individuals possessing such details were advised to report them to the SCID headquarters in Yola or any nearby police station. The Adamawa Police Command concluded by restating its dedication to upholding professionalism, ensuring accountability, and respecting the fundamental rights of all citizens.
