The Borno State Police Command has announced the recovery of a hand grenade from a drainage slab in the Moduganari area of Maiduguri, the state capital. The unexploded device was retrieved by operatives from the EOD-CBRN Base 13, Maiduguri, following a report received by the command on Saturday concerning a suspected explosive.

Nahum Daso, the command’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed this development in a statement issued on Saturday. He stated that the report of the suspicious item was received at approximately 12:40 pm on August 15, 2026. The statement, titled “Borno Police Command Recovers One UXO (Hand Grenade) in Maiduguri,” detailed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, psc, immediately directed operatives to respond to the report.

According to the statement, “Acting on the directives of the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, psc, following a report received at about 1240hrs on 15 August 2026 regarding a suspected UXO found on a drainage slab in Moduganari area, operatives of the EOD-CBRN Base 13, Maiduguri, promptly mobilised to the scene and safely recovered the item.”

Daso further noted that the recovered unexploded ordnance (UXO) has been secured and is awaiting further examination. An investigation is currently underway to determine the origin of the grenade and the circumstances surrounding its discovery. The Commissioner of Police praised the alertness of the public members who swiftly notified the police, reaffirming the Command’s dedication to safeguarding lives and property throughout the state.

The PPRO also advised members of the public to refrain from touching, moving, or tampering with any suspected explosive device. The statement concluded by emphasizing that “The Borno State Police Command remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents and urges continued cooperation and timely reporting of suspicious objects or activities.”
