Jigawa Police Boss Unveils Tough Measures Against Thugs, Criminals

The newly appointed Commissioner of Police in Jigawa State, Mr. Tijjani Murtala, has unveiled a comprehensive plan to revamp the state's security architecture. During his inaugural press conference with journalists in Dutse, Murtala emphasized the importance of adopting intelligence-driven policing strategies to combat crime and maintain public order. The police chief outlined his administration's commitment to upholding professionalism, discipline, and accountability within the force, while also prioritizing community policing and collaboration with other security agencies. To enhance security, the command will increase patrols, particularly at night and in townships, and deploy specialized security units to major markets and identified hotspots across the state. These measures aim to prevent crime, ensure swift responses to security incidents, and restrict the freedom of movement for criminals. Additionally, the police will enforce existing traffic regulations to prevent the use of obscured or defaced number plates, unauthorized tinted glasses, and unregistered vehicles, which can hinder security identification. However, Murtala assured motorists that these enforcement efforts will be carried out professionally and within the bounds of the law. The commissioner also announced plans to launch a sustained campaign against illicit drug abuse, trafficking, and distribution, recognizing the link between drug abuse and violent crime, youth delinquency, and other social vices. To address this issue, the police will collaborate with relevant agencies, parents, schools, traditional institutions, and youth organizations to implement both enforcement and preventive measures. Furthermore, Murtala warned politicians and their supporters against engaging in political thuggery and electoral violence ahead of the 2027 general elections. He assured them that the police will remain neutral and not be used as a tool for intimidation or harassment. However, he cautioned that the mobilization of criminal elements, destruction of property, violent campaigns, and hate speech will not be tolerated. Murtala emphasized that political differences should never be used as a justification for violence. The police chief also disclosed plans to intensify the fight against cybercrime, internet-enabled fraud, online blackmail, and cult-related activities, particularly among young people. The command's approach will combine enforcement with public awareness, counseling, and engagement with youths. Murtala stressed that community policing will remain a key pillar of his administration, as effective security cannot be achieved without the active participation of residents. He urged the public to provide timely and credible information on suspicious activities and emerging security threats. The commissioner pledged to strengthen engagement with traditional rulers, religious leaders, political leaders, market associations, transport unions, youth organizations, civil society groups, professional bodies, and educational institutions. He also announced plans to deepen operational cooperation with sister security agencies through intelligence sharing, joint patrols, and coordinated emergency responses. Murtala warned police personnel against corruption, extortion, abuse of office, and unnecessary use of force, emphasizing that officers who discharge their duties professionally will be supported, while those found guilty of misconduct will face disciplinary action. The commissioner also announced plans for continuous training and capacity development of personnel in intelligence-led policing, modern investigative techniques, human rights, crowd management, firearms handling, cybercrime, emergency response, and community policing. The command will sustain its operations against armed robbery, cattle rustling, theft, vandalism, gender-based violence, farmer-herder conflicts, communal clashes, and other forms of criminality. Murtala appealed to residents not to harbor criminals or provide them with safe havens, urging parents and guardians to pay greater attention to the activities and associations of their children and wards. He also called on traditional and religious leaders to condemn criminal activities and support the police in maintaining public order.
