Britain's Half-Year Crackdown Sees Over 4,700 Illegal Worker Arrests

The United Kingdom's Immigration Enforcement division has reported a significant surge in operations, leading to the apprehension of more than 4,700 individuals found to be working unlawfully within the country during the initial six months of 2026. This announcement came from the Home Office, highlighting an intensified national effort.

Official statistics reveal that a total of 4,756 arrests were executed between January and June of the current year. This figure represents a 20 per cent increase when compared to the corresponding period in 2025. Furthermore, enforcement officers conducted 7,270 raids on various businesses, marking a 31 per cent rise year-on-year, as the UK government continues to escalate its measures against illicit employment.

In a statement released on its X (formerly Twitter) platform on Tuesday, the Home Office declared these results as the most successful six-month period in British history. The statement read: “Latest figures show that in the first six months of 2026, Immigration Enforcement arrested more than 4,700 illegal workers – the most successful six-month period in British history. Illegal working enforcement has reached the highest level in British history. More than 17,000 illegal working arrests have been made since July 2024, a 122 per cent increase on the two years prior.”

Geographically, London recorded the highest number of arrests, with 1,256 individuals apprehended, indicating a 32 per cent increase. The West Midlands followed with 701 arrests, up by 22 per cent, while the South West saw 693 arrests, representing a 44 per cent jump.

Employers across various sectors, including beauty, retail, and hospitality, have collectively incurred £74 million in civil penalties so far this year due to their involvement in hiring illegal workers. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood commented on the vigorous enforcement, stating, “This surge in enforcement activity takes us to the highest level in British history. Illegal workers and rogue employers have nowhere to hide.”

The Reform UK party, however, expressed skepticism regarding the new figures, accusing the Labour government of “insulting the intelligence of the British public.” Zia Yusuf, Reform’s home affairs spokesman, reacted to the data by saying, “The British public can see the scourge of illegal working growing all around them. Labour is only insulting their intelligence by claiming it is not.”

Looking ahead, the Home Office confirmed its plans to further increase the penalties imposed on companies found employing undocumented workers. Effective from October 1, businesses operating in the gig economy, such as those employing delivery riders, could face fines of up to £60,000 per illegal worker or a prison sentence of up to five years for non-compliance.
