Sokoto Village Under Siege: Bandits Kill Police Officer, Civilians

A recent attack by Lakurawa militants on the Girkau community in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State has left a devastating trail of death and destruction. According to the Sokoto State Police Command, the assault resulted in the loss of a police officer and two civilians, while several others sustained injuries. The militants, who were heavily armed, also set fire to two security vehicles belonging to the Nigeria Police Force and the Sokoto State Community Guard Corps. The police command's spokesman, Ahmed Rufai, confirmed the incident, stating that the command received a distress call and promptly deployed operatives to the community. Upon arrival, the security personnel engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, ultimately repelling them. Unfortunately, one police officer lost his life during the exchange of gunfire. Rufai expressed his regret over the loss, saying, 'It is unfortunate that we lost one of our men during the attack. We received a distress call from the community and immediately mobilised our personnel to the scene. We were able to repel the Lakurawa bandits, but during the exchange of gunfire, one of our officers paid the supreme price.' The command has since intensified security operations in the area, reaffirming its commitment to protecting the lives and property of residents. Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers stormed the community, firing indiscriminately at security personnel and villagers, forcing many to flee for safety. Among the victims were a police officer identified as Hussaini Manyu, an elderly resident named Bala Wakili, and a young herder who was allegedly shot dead after refusing to surrender his cattle to the attackers. A community leader, who preferred to remain anonymous for security reasons, described the incident as one of the worst attacks in the area in recent months. The leader said, 'What happened in Girkau is heartbreaking. We lost a police officer who was defending the community, an elderly man, and a young herder. They also burnt security vehicles and took away many cattle. Our people are living in fear because these attacks are becoming too frequent.' Residents have appealed to the Federal Government and the Sokoto State Government to reinforce security operations across Kebbe and neighbouring local government areas to prevent further attacks.
