Abia Residents March for Freedom of Detained IPOB Leader Nnamdi Kanu

In a massive show of solidarity, hundreds of residents from Afarukwu in Abia State, the ancestral home of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), took to the streets to demand the immediate release of their leader. Kanu, who has spent over five years in detention, was recently convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by Justice James Omotosho on terrorism-related charges. However, his legal team is challenging the verdict at the Court of Appeal. The protesters, comprising men and women of various age groups, marched through community roads, chanting solidarity songs in Igbo and waving banners with Kanu's image. The banner, which was prominently displayed, bore the title 'IPOB ABIA STATE CHAPTER DECLARES THE ONLY IPOB SUPREME LEADER AND DIRECTOR OF RADIO BIAFRA: ONYENDU MAZI NNAMDI OKWU KANU.' The procession was led by traditional leaders and community members, who urged the Federal Government to secure Kanu's release. Alloy Ejimakor, Kanu's special counsel, shared footage of the rally on social media, calling on South-East governors to rise together and impress on President Bola Tinubu to resolve the matter outside of the judicial realm. Ejimakor stated, 'As Abia State marches today in the legions for #FreeNnamdiKanu, SE Governors must rise together & impress on President Tinubu to do the right thing by resolving this matter outside of the judicial realm. Despite the unjust conviction, this matter was political from day one.' The conviction of Kanu has been a point of controversy among legal practitioners and human rights advocates in the South-East region. Prior to his conviction, a High Court in Enugu had declared the initial proscription of IPOB as a terrorist organisation by the Federal Government as unconstitutional, null, and void. The court ruled that the executive order designating the self-determination group as a terrorist entity violated fundamental rights guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution (as amended). As Kanu's legal team pursues an appeal to quash the conviction, community leaders and civil rights groups in Abia State continue to press President Tinubu's administration to opt for an out-of-court, political resolution to maintain stability in the region.
