Borno Police Nab Five Over Sale of Carcass Meat to Unwary Consumers

In a significant crackdown, the Borno State Police Command has apprehended five individuals suspected of engaging in the illicit sale of meat from deceased cattle to unsuspecting members of the public in Maiduguri. The arrest was made on July 29, 2026, by the Command's Violent Crime Response Unit, following actionable intelligence regarding the alleged activities at the Old Maiduguri Cattle Market. The suspects, identified as Modu Umar, 43, Abba Mohammed, 24, Adam Abubakar, 21, Faruq Gambo, 19, and Mada Usman, 24, were allegedly involved in procuring dead cattle, dissecting the carcasses, and then supplying the meat to vendors who would resale it to consumers. Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects were caught in the act of transporting a dead cow's carcass to the Morumti area of Maiduguri for further processing and distribution. In a statement released on Monday, August 3, Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, disclosed that investigations are ongoing to determine the scope of the operation. 'The suspects are currently in police custody while discreet investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the activity, trace the intended distribution network, identify and apprehend other persons who may be connected with the alleged practice,' the statement said. The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, condemned the practice, emphasizing that it poses significant risks to public health. He assured that the Command will continue to collaborate with relevant government agencies and stakeholders to prevent the sale of unwholesome meat and protect consumers across the state.
