Bandit Leader Linked to Gen. Rabe's Abduction Strikes Katsina, Seven Dead

Sayaya community in Katsina State's Matazu Local Government Area has been thrown into mourning following a brutal bandit assault that claimed seven lives. The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, June 25, 2026, saw armed men storm the village, unleashing a hail of gunfire that sent residents scrambling for safety. Locals described the incident as one of the most savage in recent memory, shattering the fragile calm that had settled over the community after security forces were deployed.
An anonymous resident, speaking to Daily Trust, recounted the terror: "We were asleep when we heard heavy gunshots. People were screaming, children were crying, and everyone was running in different directions. By the time the gunmen left, seven of our people were lying lifeless." The victims, according to residents, included farmers and traders who had hoped to resume their daily routines after experiencing a period of relative peace.
Community members pointed fingers at Kachallah Fulani Muhammad, a notorious bandit leader, as the mastermind behind the deadly incursion. Muhammad is infamous for orchestrating violent raids and abductions across Matazu and its surrounding areas. Alaramma Jibrin, another resident, stated, "This is the same man who has terrorised our villages for years. He is the one who abducted major General Rabe Abubakar Batsari RTD and his wife. Anytime we hear his name, we know trouble is coming."
The resurgence of violence is being attributed by residents to the recent withdrawal of troops assigned to Operation Fansan Yamma. A community elder lamented the situation, saying, "When the soldiers were here, we could sleep with our eyes closed. But once they left, the bandits came back with more anger. It feels like we have been abandoned."
The reign of fear extends beyond Sayaya. The same bandit group is alleged to have recently blocked the Karaduwa–Rimaye road in broad daylight, abducting travelers and assaulting others without resistance. Sulaiman Sale Sayaya, a commuter, described the harrowing experience: "They stopped vehicles on the road as if it was their territory. People were beaten, some were taken away, and nobody could help."
In Matazu town, sorrow filled the air as families and community members gathered for the Islamic burial rites of the victims. Tears flowed freely as the enormity of the loss weighed heavily on everyone. "This is not just a tragedy for Sayaya; it is a tragedy for the entire local government," a community leader expressed, adding, "We have lost innocent lives, and this pain will remain with us for a long time."
The pervasive fear has led many Sayaya residents to abandon their homes, seeking refuge in Matazu town and other nearby communities, unsure if it will ever be safe to return. A displaced woman, in the process of relocating her children, articulated their despair: "We cannot stay and wait to be killed. At least in town, we can sleep without hearing gunshots."
A Daily Trust source identified the deceased as Lawal Chiki (from Sayaya), Abdullahi Mustapha, Yalili Mai Ruwa, Isau Maharba, Salma Tasi’u, and Ibrahim Uncle, who was reportedly mentally ill.
For years, communities throughout Katsina State have grappled with relentless bandit attacks, characterized by k!llings, kidnappings, cattle rustling, and the destruction of livelihoods. Farmers are now hesitant to tend their fields, traders avoid major roads, and parents live in constant apprehension for their children's safety. "Our farms are there, but our lives are more important," a farmer stated, "If we go to the bush, we may not return."
Residents are urgently appealing to both the state and federal governments for decisive and sustained intervention, warning that short-term military operations will not guarantee lasting peace. A community leader emphasized, "We don’t want temporary peace. We want a permanent solution. We want to live without fear. We want our children to sleep at home, not to run for their lives."
