The Anambra State Police Command has initiated a comprehensive investigation into a suspected child trafficking syndicate, following the rescue of a 37-year-old woman from an irate crowd in the Awada area of Obosi. Police operatives from the Awada Divisional Headquarters intervened and saved the suspect, identified as Anurika Nweme, at Divine Mercy Hospital, according to a statement released on Thursday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.

Eyewitnesses at the hospital reported that on the afternoon of June 23, 2026, the suspect gained unauthorized entry into the facility. She was reportedly dressed in a nurse’s uniform and was seen secretly recording newborn infants within the maternity ward. When confronted by hospital staff and other individuals present, Nweme allegedly claimed to be an employee. However, a verification by the hospital management confirmed that she was not on their staff roster, as stated by Ikenga.

Law enforcement officers rescued Nweme from the angry mob, placing her in protective custody to ensure her safety while administrative profiling of the case is underway. "The suspect is currently in protective custody and assisting the investigating police officers in identifying others involved," Ikenga confirmed. He added that further updates on the investigation would be provided as they emerge.

This incident occurs amidst a wider regional effort to combat illegal adoption and child trafficking activities. The Akwa Ibom State Police Command recently intercepted a bus in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, rescuing three missing children and apprehending two suspected child traffickers. Similarly, in Rivers State, authorities have closed down five hospitals and one patent medicine store, arresting seven suspects, including some facility operators. These actions followed discreet investigations into reports from the public concerning alleged child trafficking, unlawful medical practices, and other offenses.
