A New York couple has been handed a four-year prison sentence after admitting to criminally negligent homicide in connection with the tragic death of their three-year-old daughter. Authorities pinpointed prolonged neglect and untreated medical conditions as the primary causes of the child's demise.

Joycelynn Ann Dylewski passed away in February of last year, having been rushed to a hospital from her family's home in Corinth, New York. Emergency responders had initially been called to the residence following reports that the young girl was experiencing severe difficulty breathing. Investigations conducted by the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office later confirmed that Joycelynn had suffered from a severe and long-standing lice infestation that had gone unaddressed for an extended period.

Officials indicated that this untreated condition contributed significantly to acute anaemia, which ultimately caused substantial damage to her heart and other vital organs. Furthermore, findings revealed that Joycelynn had not received any medical treatment for ten months leading up to her death. Investigators also alleged that she had been administered clonidine, a prescription medication for high blood pressure, despite it not being prescribed for her.

Her parents, Matthew Dylewski and Samantha Dylewski, had earlier this year entered a guilty plea to the charge of criminally negligent homicide. During the sentencing proceedings, Judge James Davis sternly criticised the couple for their failure to protect their child. "You failed as a parent," Davis declared. "Your entire job was to keep her safe." The judge further described the child's death as entirely preventable and highlighted that she had endured suffering over a prolonged period. "She was a three-year-old, and you failed in the most horrific way," Davis stated. "She was completely reliant upon you… This was completely preventable, and it’s unconscionable, and I want you to think about that fact."

Authorities confirmed that the family's living conditions were highly unsanitary, with reports detailing rooms filled with significant amounts of rubbish and debris. The property was subsequently condemned. In a statement, Jim Tedisco affirmed that the child's death was a direct consequence of "acute and chronic neglect."

At the sentencing, Matthew Dylewski expressed his profound remorse regarding his daughter's passing. "I totally wish that it didn’t happen," he said. "I wish it would be that I died instead of my daughter. I still think that to this day… I constantly think about it. Nothing is ever going to change." Samantha Dylewski also acknowledged her responsibilities as a parent, telling the court, "As their mother, it’s my duty to protect them from harm, and I failed."

Judge Davis imposed the maximum permissible sentence, ordering both parents to serve four years in prison. The court also barred them from having any contact with their four surviving children until the year 2038. "Your daughter suffered over a long period of time," Judge Davis reiterated. "Even the other children could see that she suffered because of your neglect. It’s a gift to have a child. You had several children, and all of them suffered at your hands."
