Football Pundit Jamie Carragher Battles Bankruptcy Petition for £700,000 Tax Arrears

Former Liverpool and England international defender, Jamie Carragher, now a prominent football analyst, is currently facing a bankruptcy petition stemming from an outstanding tax liability reportedly ranging between £700,000 and £800,000.

Documents reviewed by the BBC confirm that a legal case was officially initiated against James Lee Duncan Carragher on Wednesday. This bankruptcy petition was lodged by legal representatives of HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and was initially brought to public attention by City AM.

When contacted, an HMRC spokesperson informed BBC Sport that while the agency refrains from commenting on specific individual cases, it is committed to assisting customers with tax debts. The spokesperson highlighted their practice of collaborating with individuals to resolve such matters. "We adopt a supportive stance when addressing customers who owe taxes, and we do everything within our capacity to help those who engage with us to clear their debts, including offering structured installment plans," the spokesperson stated. "We only resort to filing for bankruptcy as a measure of last resort."

Carragher, who represented Liverpool from 1996 to 2013, has since established himself as a highly respected football pundit. He is a regular fixture on Sky Sports' Premier League broadcasts, the popular 'Stick to Football' podcast, and CBS Sports' UEFA Champions League coverage.

In response to the development, a spokesperson for Carragher described the situation as a private tax affair, assuring that active measures are being undertaken to resolve it. "This is a private tax matter that should have been settled earlier, and the necessary steps are being implemented today to conclude it," the spokesperson affirmed. "It is understood that this issue will not escalate further and is expected to be resolved in the immediate future."

Carragher is not an isolated case among former footballers confronting financial difficulties related to tax post-retirement. Several ex-England internationals, including David James, Wes Brown, and Lee Hendrie, have previously been declared bankrupt. In 2024, Carragher's former Liverpool teammate, Emile Heskey, lost a legal challenge over an unpaid tax bill amounting to £1.637 million. Similarly, in 2025, former England international Trevor Sinclair faced bankruptcy proceedings after failing to pay a tax debt exceeding £36,000. That same year, HMRC filed a bankruptcy petition against former England winger Shaun Wright-Phillips at the High Court in London. Last September, it was also disclosed that as many as 200 footballers might have collectively lost tens of millions of pounds, with some losing their homes and being declared bankrupt. Danny Murphy, a former England midfielder and Match of the Day pundit, revealed he lost approximately £5 million due to what he termed "financial abuse."
