HMRC Pursuit Puts Liverpool Icon Jamie Carragher on Brink of Bankruptcy

Jamie Carragher, the revered former Liverpool and England international now prominent as a football pundit, is reportedly facing the serious prospect of bankruptcy due to an outstanding tax obligation. Legal representatives for His Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) initiated proceedings against the ex-defender at the High Court in London on Wednesday, August 26.

An HMRC spokesperson, while refraining from commenting on specific cases, affirmed to BBC Sport their agency's policy: "We take a supportive approach to dealing with customers who have tax debts and do everything we can to help those who engage with us to get out of debt, such as offering instalment plans. We only petition for bankruptcy as a last resort."

Carragher, whose illustrious playing career at Liverpool spanned from 1996 to 2013, is a familiar face on major football broadcasts, including Sky Sports' Premier League coverage, the "Stick To Football" program, and CBS Sports' Champions League analysis.

Responding to the development, a representative for Carragher informed BBC Sport that this is "a private tax matter that should have been resolved sooner, and the appropriate steps are being taken today to settle it. It is understood that the matter will not proceed any further and will be resolved imminently."

Carragher's situation is not an isolated incident among professional footballers post-retirement. Several former England internationals, such as David James, Wes Brown, and Lee Hendrie, have previously been declared bankrupt. More recently, in 2024, ex-Liverpool teammate Emile Heskey was unsuccessful in a legal challenge concerning an unpaid tax bill amounting to £1.637 million. The year 2025 also saw Trevor Sinclair declared bankrupt over a tax debt exceeding £36,000, and Shaun Wright-Phillips faced a bankruptcy petition from HMRC at the London High Court. Last September, revelations emerged indicating that as many as 200 footballers might have incurred losses running into tens of millions of pounds, with some losing their homes and being forced into bankruptcy.
