Ozumba Mbadiwe Road Set for 35-Day Upgrade, Lagos Announces Diversions

Full Story
The Lagos State Government has unveiled plans for a 35-day rehabilitation project on Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, slated to commence on Monday, October 19, 2026. This vital infrastructure upgrade will span the section from Adetokunbo Ademola Street/Civic Centre to Samuel Manuwa Street/BJ, with authorities urging motorists to utilize designated alternative routes to mitigate traffic congestion throughout the construction period.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, issued a detailed traffic advisory on Thursday, October 15, 2026, outlining the proposed traffic management strategies. Key among these is the implementation of a contraflow system on the Lagos-bound carriageway, extending from Samuel Manuwa Street to Adetokunbo Ademola Street/Civic Centre, to facilitate work on the opposing lane.
The advisory meticulously detailed several alternative routes for commuters. Those journeying from Bonny Camp or Falomo towards Civic Centre and Lekki are advised to take Adeyemo Alakija Street by Muri Okunola Park, then connect to Adeola Hopewell Street, proceed via Akinbo Savage Street, and link Bishop Aboyade Cole Street. From there, they can access the expressway through School Corner, situated near Black Diamond, heading towards Sandfield.
Motorists heading from Falomo to Akin Adesola Street should navigate through IMB, connecting to the Coastal Road entrance via Adetokunbo Ademola Street towards Eko Hotel Roundabout. Their journey can then continue through Ajose Adeogun Street and Ligali Street, ultimately reaching Black Diamond School Corner.
For those departing from Bonny Camp, the recommended route involves using Ahmadu Bello Way to reach Eko Hotel Roundabout through the IMB/Coastal Road entrance. From this point, they can proceed via Bishop Aboyade Cole Street and the Adetokunbo Ademola Street/Eko Hotel Roundabout axis towards Ajose Adeogun Street and Ligali Street, en route to Black Diamond School Corner.
Vehicles travelling from Eko Hotel through Adetokunbo Ademola Street towards Civic Centre will be diverted onto Bishop Aboyade Cole Street and School Corner, near Black Diamond, towards Sandfield. Road users exiting via the 1004 gate, along with others in the vicinity, will be directed to turn left or execute a U-turn directly in front of the gate before continuing on Bishop Aboyade Cole Street towards School Corner and Sandfield.
Additionally, motorists originating from Eko Hotel bound for Falomo and Ikoyi are advised to use Sanusi Fafunwa Street to connect with Akin Adesola Street and proceed towards the ramp bridge.
Commissioner Osiyemi affirmed that the Lagos State Government will deploy personnel from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to oversee traffic flow and minimize disruptions. He quoted the advisory stating, “As preliminary works of the project commences at VGC, the State Government will deploy Officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority to coordinate vehicle movement, reduce congestion and minimize inconvenience.”
The commissioner urged motorists to proactively plan their commutes ahead of the project's commencement and strictly adhere to all traffic management directives. He further added, “To this end, motorists are implored to plan their movement ahead, obey traffic officials, and cooperate with the interventions put in place to ease traffic.”
