The German Mission in Nigeria has issued a strong advisory to Nigerians intending to travel to Germany, urging them to strictly adhere to the established official visa application procedures. This caution, released via their official X handle on Wednesday, comes amidst widespread uncertainty regarding the correct initial steps for prospective applicants. The mission explicitly cautioned against forwarding application documents to German diplomatic offices via email, as this method is not valid for securing appointments or submitting applications.

According to the mission's guidance, individuals must first determine the most suitable visa category, which depends on the purpose and length of their intended visit. For short trips, typically lasting up to 90 days within a 180-day period, such as for tourism or family visits, a Schengen visa is usually necessary. Conversely, a national visa is mandated for longer stays exceeding 90 days, covering objectives like employment, academic pursuits, vocational training, and specific family reunification scenarios. Furthermore, applicants must ascertain which German mission is designated to handle their specific application before taking any further steps.

The German missions recommend utilizing the official online appointment booking system, ensuring it corresponds to the correct visa category, and meticulously following all given instructions. For some long-stay visa types, the initial application can be commenced via Germany's Consular Services Portal. It is crucial to note, however, that initiating an application online does not negate the necessity of an in-person appointment.
