Rayo Vallecano vs. Athletic Bilbao Game Halted by Fan Disruption Over Club President

Full Story
The La Liga encounter between Rayo Vallecano and Athletic Bilbao on Saturday was brought to an abrupt halt following protests from home supporters at the Vallecas stadium. Fans expressed their displeasure by pelting the pitch with various objects, directing their anger primarily at the club's president, Raul Martin Presa.
In what marked their first La Liga home game of the current season, Rayo Vallecano witnessed a chaotic scene unfold just 13 minutes into the match. Supporters began launching paper aeroplanes, rubber balls, and other items onto the playing surface. This immediate disruption prompted the referee to suspend play and instruct both teams to return to their respective dressing rooms.
Despite an attempt to resume the game, the continuous barrage of objects from the stands persisted upon the players' return. Consequently, with the score still level at nil-nil, the match officials ultimately took the decision to abandon the fixture entirely.
The fan unrest is a culmination of long-standing grievances from both supporters and players concerning the stewardship of the club under Presa. Major concerns include the general management practices, as well as the deplorable condition of the Vallecas stadium and the team's training facilities.
This season alone, Rayo Vallecano had to play three of its earlier home matches at Leganes’s Butarque stadium. This was necessitated by “serious deficiencies” at their home ground, which required urgent safety repairs. The Vallecas stadium has reportedly suffered from poor maintenance throughout Rayo's lease period, a situation that has led the Madrid regional government to initiate proceedings to terminate the current agreement. Furthermore, the club was forced to relocate a league match to Butarque last season due to the unplayable state of the Vallecas pitch.
