Portugal Football Body Provisionally Bans Ronaldo Amidst Disciplinary Investigation

Full Story
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has handed down a provisional suspension to star player Cristiano Ronaldo. This action comes as the federation's disciplinary arm delves into an inquiry concerning the events surrounding his exit from the national team's training camp back in September.
On Saturday, October 10, 2026, Portugal's public broadcaster, RTP, confirmed this development, citing a statement from the FPF's Disciplinary Council. According to the statement, the council had on October 9, opted to initiate disciplinary proceedings against Ronaldo, following reports on October 7 of potential infractions. The FPF, as reported by RTP, stated that “foi determinada a suspensão preventiva não automática do jogador,” which translates to “a non-automatic provisional suspension of the player was imposed.” The matter was then escalated to the FPF's Disciplinary Investigation Commission on October 10 and marked as urgent. The federation further indicated that all details regarding the ongoing proceedings would remain private until the investigation's conclusion. Separately, SPORT TV, a Portuguese sports broadcaster, also announced the suspension on October 10, echoing the disciplinary statement.
Ronaldo's departure from the Portuguese training camp in Copenhagen occurred on September 30, reportedly due to a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus regarding his position within the squad. Prior to the FPF's announcement, beIN SPORTS had reported on October 6 that the Portugal captain had issued an apology for his actions and expressed readiness to accept any penalties. In a statement cited by beIN SPORTS, Ronaldo reportedly said, "I should not have done it. The responsibility is exclusively mine," extending his apologies to his national team colleagues.
Furthermore, beIN SPORTS indicated that the prolific forward had dismissed any plans of retiring from international football, signaling his desire to rejoin the national team once any imposed suspension is served. RTP corroborated this, also reporting Ronaldo's readiness to return to the Portugal squad. It is important to note that the federation's recent ruling remains provisional, with disciplinary proceedings still underway, and the official statement did not outline the ultimate sanctions Ronaldo might encounter.
