Alcaraz Lifts Japan Open Trophy in Triumphant Return from Injury

Full Story
Carlos Alcaraz has clinched his first tennis title since recovering from a four-month injury break, triumphing at the Japan Open. The top-seeded Spaniard, who was also the defending champion, overcame the Czech Republic's Jiri Lehecka in the final with a score of 7-6 (7/4), 6-4. The decisive match, held in Tokyo on Tuesday, saw Alcaraz secure his first trophy since his victory at the Qatar Open in February.
This win marks Alcaraz's third tournament appearance following his return from a wrist injury, having previously reached the quarter-finals of the US Open and participated in the Laver Cup. Reflecting on his comeback, Alcaraz shared his struggles, stating, "A lot of negative thoughts come to your mind: if you’re going to come back healthy, if you’re going to be the same as I was before. A lot of thoughts came to my mind, but I tried to put those thoughts away all the time." He added, "My team and I knew that when I came back, I was going to be healthy 100 per cent, and if I feel something, it’s not going to be anything at all."
The world number three's Japan Open success is his third title of the year, a tally that includes the Australian Open, bringing his career total to 27. This victory comes shortly after world number one Jannik Sinner announced the premature end of his season due to an ongoing knee injury.
In the final showdown, Alcaraz faced a determined Lehecka, ranked 19th globally, who was seeking his inaugural title of the year. Despite Alcaraz holding a 3-1 head-to-head advantage prior to the match, Lehecka started strongly, immediately breaking the Spaniard's serve and putting pressure on the top seed. Alcaraz, however, fought back, breaking Lehecka's serve midway through the opening set after a prolonged exchange, then showcased powerful tennis in the subsequent game. Lehecka proved resilient, forcing Alcaraz to deploy two exceptional drop shots to eventually win the first set in a tiebreak.
The second set saw Lehecka continue to challenge Alcaraz. Nevertheless, the defending champion managed to secure a crucial break midway through the set, maintaining his advantage to seal the match and claim the championship. Alcaraz is now set to compete in the Shanghai Masters, which commences on Wednesday. It's worth noting that he withdrew from last year's Shanghai tournament at the eleventh hour after his Tokyo victory, citing "physical issues" and criticizing the demanding tennis schedule.
