Ghana's Black Stars: Queiroz Steps Down Amidst Deepening Football Crisis

Full Story
Carlos Queiroz is no longer the head coach of Ghana, a decision that follows a painful loss to Gambia which has intensified the ongoing troubles for the Black Stars. On Thursday, the Ghana Football Association confirmed a mutual agreement with the experienced Portuguese tactician to end his contract, less than a month after he was given a fresh mandate to lead the team.
In a farewell statement released on the association’s official website, Queiroz remarked that “This was not an easy decision, but both parties agreed that, under the present circumstances, ending our professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action, with the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football above everything else.” He further explained that “the necessary conditions were not fully established, and our recent performance added to the decision to bring this journey to an end,” contributing to the conclusion of his tenure.
This move comes in the wake of Ghana's disappointing 4-2 home loss to Gambia during an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture. The defeat was particularly bitter as the four-time African champions squandered a two-goal advantage, having led 2-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium. Goals from Ernest Nuamah and Felix Afena-Gyan initially gave Ghana a comfortable lead, only for Gambia to score four unanswered goals, staging an impressive comeback.
Having previously suffered a 2-0 away defeat to Ivory Coast, Ghana now finds itself at the bottom of Group C, yet to register a single point after two games. Queiroz's departure marks the end of a tenure characterized by a dismal record of one victory, two draws, and four losses across seven matches, with the team managing to score only five goals while conceding ten.
This exit brings to a close a tumultuous five-month period with the national team, which commenced in April when the 73-year-old coach inked an initial four-month deal aimed at guiding Ghana through to the 2026 World Cup.
Previously, Queiroz had successfully steered Ghana to the World Cup knockout stage, a feat not achieved since 2010. This was accomplished after securing a victory against Panama and a draw with England. However, their World Cup journey concluded in the Round of 32, where Colombia narrowly defeated the Black Stars 1-0. While his initial term concluded post-tournament, the GFA opted to reappoint him on September 2nd.
Queiroz's departure once again plunges the GFA into a quest for managerial stability during a particularly challenging period. With only two matches played, Ghana trails Ivory Coast and Gambia by six points. Considering that only the top two teams from each four-team group will qualify, the Black Stars are now confronted with a formidable task to avoid failing to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations for the second consecutive time.
