FA Hints at Action After Man City Financial Rules Verdict

Full Story
The Football Association (FA) has indicated it is contemplating measures following the Independent Commission’s findings against Manchester City Football Club regarding violations of the Premier League’s financial regulations. The FA stated that the commission’s verdict carries “significant implications for the integrity of the game” but chose not to elaborate further due to ongoing proceedings involving the Premier League and Manchester City.
In a statement released on Friday, the sport’s governing body confirmed it was meticulously evaluating the commission’s decision and its wider ramifications. The statement read: “The Independent Commission’s decision has significant implications for the integrity of the game. We are carefully considering the decision and its implications and will take action where appropriate.” It further added, “As proceedings between the Premier League and Manchester City Football Club remain ongoing, we do not intend to comment further at this stage. We will, however, continue to monitor developments closely.”
This announcement from the FA came after an independent commission determined that Manchester City had committed serious breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules over a period spanning nine seasons. According to the Premier League, the commission found that City had established “sham” contracts with commercial partners, submitted inaccurate financial records, and deliberately hidden its true financial position from auditors and football regulatory bodies.
Furthermore, the commission concluded that the club had substantially exceeded both Premier League and UEFA spending limits. It also upheld three out of the four alleged breaches concerning City’s cooperation with the Premier League’s investigation. While the Premier League is yet to decide on the appropriate sanctions for these infringements, Manchester City retains the right to appeal the commission’s conclusions. The club has consistently maintained its innocence and is anticipated to challenge the ruling.
The FA’s recent statement did not specify the exact nature of the action it might undertake, simply stating it would act “where appropriate.” This reaction from the FA emerged three days after the Premier League made the Commission’s findings public on Tuesday. On the same day, Manchester City vehemently rejected the verdict, asserting its “innocence of the accusations” and pledging to pursue all available appeal avenues. The Premier League had previously expressed a desire for a swift resolution to Manchester City’s financial rules case.
