Tennis legend Novak Djokovic experienced a stunning early exit from the U.S. Open on Sunday night, suffering a defeat at the hands of unseeded Argentine player Mariano Navone in a grueling five-set encounter. The match saw the 24-time Grand Slam champion struggle visibly with his physical condition. Djokovic was overcome by the world No. 48, losing with set scores of 7-6 (5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, marking his most premature Grand Slam departure in two decades.

Throughout the intense four-hour-plus battle, the Serbian star displayed clear signs of physical distress. He was observed vomiting on the court and experienced a cramp that forced him to tend to his foot. Furthermore, Djokovic required medical attention during a timeout, receiving medication from a doctor and undergoing a back massage to alleviate his discomfort.

As the deciding set progressed, the 39-year-old’s emotional state became increasingly apparent. Trailing 3-1, Djokovic began to tear up, even as the supportive crowd attempted to rally him. Despite the encouragement, he found himself unable to mount a comeback. In stark contrast, Navone maintained his aggressive play and showed no signs of intimidation against one of tennis’s all-time greats. The Argentine decisively dominated the final set, securing what stands as one of the most significant victories of his career.

Following the match, Djokovic openly acknowledged his inability to enjoy the contest. He stated, "I didn't enjoy myself. I think it was obvious that it was an awful feeling on the court for me."

This loss carries particular weight, as it represents the first time Djokovic has ever been eliminated in the opening round of the U.S. Open. Moreover, it is his earliest exit from any Grand Slam tournament since 2006, when he was defeated in the first round of the Australian Open. Despite entering the tournament with an impressive 24 Grand Slam singles titles, widely cementing his status as one of the greatest tennis players ever, Djokovic was ultimately unable to overcome his physical challenges against the determined Navone.
