Fernandes Treble Powers Man Utd to Dominant Ipswich Victory in EPL

Manchester United finally kickstarted their Premier League campaign on Sunday, securing a convincing 5-2 victory over newly-promoted Ipswich Town, largely propelled by a sensational hat-trick from their captain, Bruno Fernandes. The Red Devils, still reeling from a disappointing 2-0 loss to Hull City last weekend, initially found themselves trailing when Leif Davis put the Tractor Boys ahead. However, Fernandes spearheaded United's resurgence, first equalizing with a powerful strike before the break, then converting a penalty after a Jacob Greaves own goal gave United the lead. The Portuguese maestro sealed his treble with a close-range finish and capped off his stellar performance by setting up Bryan Mbeumo for another goal.

Manager Michael Carrick implemented four changes to the squad that suffered a dismal defeat eight days prior, handing Marcus Rashford his first United start in nearly two years. The inclusion of Rashford alongside the returning England international Kobbie Mainoo significantly boosted the team's dynamics. Despite this, United once again relied heavily on Fernandes to be the decisive force in the attacking third. Persistent questions, however, remain regarding the defensive solidity of Carrick's squad.

Early defensive lapses were evident as Senne Lammens was forced into a crucial one-on-one save from Julio Enciso, who broke clear following a United corner. Ipswich then seized the lead in the 29th minute when Abdul Fatawu outpaced Luke Shaw down the flank, delivering a cross that Davis expertly swept high into the net. Moments later, the Ipswich left-back missed a golden opportunity to double their lead, but his weak shot was comfortably saved by Lammens.

Instead, the momentum shifted dramatically in United's favour due to an Ipswich error. Marcelino Nunez slipped, gifting possession to Matheus Cunha, who then teed up Fernandes to unleash a powerful shot with his weaker left foot, leveling the score. Another stroke of misfortune befell Gary O’Neil’s side eleven minutes into the second half. A shot from Harry Maguire, which initially appeared to strike his arm, deflected off Greaves and into the net. The goal stood because, despite the potential handball, the shot was deemed to be off-target and the deflection off Greaves was not considered a direct result of the alleged handball offence.

Still recovering from that setback, Greaves committed a foul on Cunha inside the box, bringing him down as he charged towards goal. Fernandes, who was recently named last season's player of the year by his peers, calmly converted the resulting spot-kick. Last season, Fernandes recorded a remarkable 21 Premier League assists, earning him numerous individual accolades, despite scoring only nine times. This performance saw the Portuguese international already a third of the way to matching his previous goal tally, as he was perfectly positioned to tap in Mbeumo’s deflected shot, completing his hat-trick.

Fernandes wasn't done yet, adding an assist when he delivered a precise pass over the top for Mbeumo, who skillfully chipped the ball over Ipswich's towering goalkeeper, Kjell Scherpen. However, United’s impressive attacking display was book-ended by defensive miscues. Ipswich was gifted a late consolation goal in stoppage time after Lisandro Martinez was dispossessed by Enciso, who then set up Chuba Akpom for an easy tap-in into an empty net.
