Tennis icon Novak Djokovic faced an unexpected early departure from the US Open on Sunday night, marking his first-ever opening-round defeat at the Flushing Meadows tournament. The 39-year-old fourth seed was overcome by Argentina's Mariano Navone in a grueling five-set encounter, with scores of 7-6 (5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. The intense match, held at Arthur Ashe Stadium, lasted for four hours and 36 minutes.

This loss represents Djokovic's earliest exit from any Grand Slam event in two decades, a streak dating back to the 2006 Australian Open. Throughout the match, the 24-time Grand Slam champion displayed visible signs of physical distress. He experienced bouts of vomiting and severe cramping, necessitating medical intervention, medication, and treatment for his lower back between sets.

The Serbian star also recorded a high number of unforced errors, totaling 70 during the game. Reflecting on the match, Djokovic admitted, "I didn’t enjoy myself. I think it was obvious that it was an awful feeling on the court for me. It's something that I've been carrying, unfortunately, pretty much every match this year: vomiting, throwing up, a serious issue there. Then my whole body starts to collapse, basically cramping and pain. Yeah, the back just gave up in the end and shoulder, and I couldn’t close it out."

Despite taking early leads in the initial set, Djokovic lost momentum and eventually dropped the tiebreak. He managed to rally, securing victories in the second and third sets. However, the physical toll became insurmountable, allowing the 25-year-old Navone to dominate the final two sets and clinch the most significant win of his career.

Navone expressed his excitement after his first career five-set triumph, stating, "It was very tough for me because you are playing with the 'GOAT' on this court. For sure it’s the best thing I’ve had on court. This is an amazing court and the biggest stage."

This recent defeat follows another early exit for Djokovic at the Cincinnati tournament earlier in August. The tennis legend is now reportedly assessing his future on the tour, raising questions about how much more physical strain his body can endure.
