SuperSport's Pidgin Football Voice, Suo Chapele, Captures World Cup Attention

Chief Suo Chapele, the SuperSport pidgin commentator covering the current 2026 FIFA World Cup, has emerged as a prominent voice during the competition. Her unique commentary delivery has led to frequent comparisons and growing confusion with the well-known comedian, Real Warri Pikin. The vocal similarity was reportedly so striking that even close family members of Real Warri Pikin mistook Chapele's broadcast for the comedian's, prompting Real Warri Pikin (Anita Asuoha) to release a video to clarify that she was not the one on television.
Born Tracy Chapele-Ugo, the celebrated commentator is the fourteenth of eighteen children. Her formative years were spent in Warri during the early 1990s and 2000s, a period she described to Bella Naija as a blend of "waterside culture, big southern vibes and religious piety." She disclosed that her deceased parents, Chief Oletu and Mrs Helen Nneka Chapele, fostered an environment where sports and reading were encouraged as recreational activities for their offspring.
Chapele's educational journey included Nana Primary School, DSC Model School 2, Airforce Secondary School, Our Ladies’ High School, and Aladja Grammar School, before she matriculated at the University of Benin and later John Moore’s University. She states that her passion for football originated in her early years. Furthermore, she attributes her conviction that a career in sports presenting was attainable to witnessing Chisom Mbonu-Ezeoke host the 2010 World Cup while visibly pregnant.
According to Chapele, her entry into pidgin commentary happened quite by chance. She recounted to BellaNaija how, in November 2014, she auditioned for a dual English and pidgin presenting position at Brila FM in Lagos. Despite no prior experience in pidgin broadcasting, she spontaneously adapted her English script into pidgin during the interview. City People, in a distinct interview, presented a slightly varied account of this origin, quoting her as stating that the audition line for pidgin presenters was shorter than the English one, and she “jumped into the pidgin one” driven by the necessity of securing employment around the time of her son’s first birthday.
Within half a year, she had successfully established her own pidgin sports program on the station. Since then, she has become a recognized personality on SuperSport, providing commentary for prominent football leagues like the English Premier League, La Liga, and Serie A. Her portfolio also includes major international competitions such as the Africa Cup of Nations, the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, and the FIFA World Cup, with a notable appearance in Qatar in 2022. During Euro 2024, Chapele mentioned that Germany’s Ministry of Art and Culture extended an invitation for her pidgin commentary to be featured in a Berlin museum exhibition, alongside celebrated commentators like Peter Drury and Ernest Okonkwo.
In a 2023 interview with Punch, Chapele, who bears the chieftaincy title Chief Chapele Ugo, discussed her family heritage and a significant honour she received in Delta State. She recounted that the current Ovie of Udu Kingdom in Delta State conferred her late father's traditional title upon her, a remarkable event as it made her the first woman in the kingdom to inherit a title typically passed down from father to son. Additionally, Chapele expanded her career into acting in 2024, securing a role in the Inkblot-produced movie “When Love Strikes.” This opportunity arose after the film's producer, Ifunanya Valerie, contacted her via Instagram, having been impressed by her sports commentary videos.
Beyond the current excitement surrounding the World Cup, Chapele views her professional efforts as contributing to a larger movement advocating for pidgin as a legitimate language for broadcasting. She has highlighted that Nigerian pidgin sports commentary gained international recognition through Emeka Enyadike at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. With an estimated 25 million native pidgin speakers, she notes a growing trend of media platforms embracing local-language coverage not just in sports, but across various content areas.
