President Tinubu: Nigerians Free to Criticize President Without Fear

President Bola Tinubu has asserted that citizens of Nigeria are at liberty to critique or even express strong disapproval of him without apprehension of any negative consequences. He emphasized that his administration's dedication to democratic principles and press freedom includes a high tolerance for public criticism. These remarks were made by President Tinubu on Thursday, September 3, during the centenary celebration of the Daily Times of Nigeria Limited, which took place in Abuja.

Representing the President at the event was the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume. Akume conveyed President Tinubu's exact words: “Let us admit that under this government, you can insult and attack the president and still go to bed without midnight troubles. This philosophy lies at the heart of the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

President Tinubu further stated that his government acknowledges the crucial role the media plays in shaping the nation's direction. He also recognized that Nigeria's current difficulties are a culmination of issues that have developed over many years. According to him, numerous problems facing the country stem from long-standing structural weaknesses, which have accumulated over decades and now demand difficult decisions for resolution.

He articulated that the monumental task of national renewal “requires the courage to understand where we have come from and confront what we have laid back and made difficult, necessary choices, but where we must go.” The President highlighted that the reforms being implemented by his administration are not merely isolated policy adjustments but are designed to fundamentally alter Nigeria’s long-term economic trajectory. He clarified that these reforms “are about changing the trajectory of our nation,” aiming to establish a stronger fiscal foundation, foster a more productive economy, reinforce institutions, attract significant investment, enhance infrastructure, and broaden opportunities for Nigerian youth. Tinubu concluded by stating that the ultimate goal is to empower Nigeria to “compete more meaningfully and purposefully in the global economy.”
