Thomas Fahmy Survives Freak Lightning Hit on Staten Island

A Republican congressional staffer, Thomas Fahmy, recently experienced a near-fatal incident in Staten Island, New York, when he was directly hit by a lightning bolt while on his way to a dental appointment. Footage captured the dramatic moment a powerful electrical discharge struck Fahmy during an unexpected thunderstorm, causing him to collapse instantly. Remarkably, the staffer emerged from the ordeal without any burns or significant injuries.

Surveillance camera footage from last Thursday, August 27, depicts Mr. Fahmy walking along Todt Avenue, passing a white picket fence under heavy rain. Despite carrying an umbrella, he suddenly fell as a vivid orange bolt of lightning connected with him. Recounting the terrifying experience to WNBC, Fahmy stated, “I was nearly 15, 20 ft away from my car when I was struck by lightning. It was a very intense burning sensation, tingling, numbness, pain. Sever pain in both of my feet.”

As he lay on the pavement, he called out for assistance, which promptly came from a nearby resident. After the harrowing event, Thomas was quickly transported to Northwell Staten Island University Hospital, where medical personnel monitored him overnight. To everyone's astonishment, he was released the following day, showing no lasting harm.

In the wake of his miraculous survival, Thomas attended church on Sunday to express his gratitude, stating he went to “thank you God.” The incident has given him a fresh perspective on life, prompting him to advise others to “appreciate life, smile and breathe fresh air once in a while,” and to remember, “don’t let life overwhelm you.”

Thomas works for Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis, who publicly commended him after the incident. Malliotakis remarked, “We are happy, grateful and relieved that Thomas, a valued member of our Staten Island office, is alive and well after being struck by lightning last week. We appreciate the good Samaritan and medical staff at Staten Island University Hospital who helped him get emergency care.” It's worth noting that the statistical probability of a person being struck by lightning stands at less than one in a million.
