Delta Assembly Speaker Guwor Calls for Violence-Free 2027 Elections

The Delta State House of Assembly has issued a strong caution to political figures and their followers, urging them not to transform the forthcoming 2027 elections into a bitter and violent contest. Instead, the legislative body emphasized the need for a focus on substantive ideas, competence, and dedicated service to the people.

Speaker Guwor Dennis delivered this warning on Wednesday as he addressed fellow lawmakers, marking the resumption of plenary sessions following the assembly's 2026 annual recess. Guwor stressed that the impending election period should be centered on presenting viable programs and capable candidates who can genuinely improve citizens' lives, rather than engaging in personal attacks, violent acts, or divisive rhetoric. He highlighted that campaigns for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections had already commenced on August 19, with campaigns for the gubernatorial and State Houses of Assembly elections scheduled to begin on September 9.

The Speaker implored all political parties, aspiring candidates, their supporters, and other relevant stakeholders to conduct themselves responsibly throughout the entire electoral process. He declared that campaigns should be guided by "ideas, programmes, competence, character and service," firmly stating that elections should never be treated as a 'do-or-die' affair.

Guwor also noted the proposed increase in Delta State’s State Constituencies from 29 to 38 as a significant pre-2027 election development. This expansion is set to create nine additional constituencies, which, according to the Speaker, will ensure more communities receive direct representation within the House. He articulated that this move would strengthen grassroots participation and grant more residents a voice in legislative matters. "Representation remains at the heart of democracy," Guwor affirmed, describing the expansion as a historic moment for the state.

Upon the resumption of legislative activities, the Speaker directed lawmakers to return to work with renewed commitment, ensuring that all pending Bills, Motions, and Petitions receive prompt attention. He further advised committee chairmen and members to apply the knowledge and skills acquired from their leadership training at the London Business School to their legislative responsibilities.

Guwor reaffirmed the House's unwavering commitment to effective legislation, robust oversight, and diligent representation, all contributing significantly to Delta State's overall development. He also commended the Delta State Government for successfully organizing the Delta State Economic and Investment Summit during the legislative recess. He stated that the summit provided a crucial opportunity to showcase the state’s investment potential and connect Delta with investors from both within and outside Nigeria.

The Speaker assured investors that the assembly would continue to provide the necessary legislative support to foster an enabling environment conducive to businesses, investments, and sustainable economic growth. He concluded by extending congratulations to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the people of Delta State on the occasion of the state’s 35th anniversary. Guwor expressed gratitude for divine protection over lawmakers and their families during the recess and warmly welcomed members back to the chamber, urging them to swiftly resume legislative duties as the remaining part of the legislative calendar demands heightened commitment to fulfill constituents’ expectations.
