Atiku Declares 2027 Presidential Bid His Final Contest

The presidential flag bearer for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has publicly stated that he will not pursue another presidential election if he is unsuccessful in the 2027 polls. This declaration was made by the former Vice President during an interview conducted in Hausa and subsequently translated on Wednesday, in response to a query about his future political aspirations should he lose in 2027. Atiku firmly reiterated, "No, I have said it before, right from this election, I will not contest again."
Abubakar, who has a long history of contesting for the presidency, also appealed to Nigerian citizens holding Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to actively participate in the 2027 election. He emphasized the crucial need for voters to remain at their respective polling units until their votes are properly counted and accounted for. "First of all, I appeal to those who have voter cards, for their own sake, their families, and their future, to go out and vote. That is the solution to the problems they are facing," he urged. He further added, "After going out to vote, they should also stay, escort, and ensure that those votes are counted."
When questioned about his suitability and health to govern Nigeria, the ADC candidate maintained that he is in good health and fully capable of leading the nation. He asserted, "No doctor has declared that I am unfit in terms of health. I know my body, I know I am healthy, and I do not have a single defect."
Reacting to Atiku's decision to not seek the presidency again if he loses in 2027, the ADC Vanguard, through a post on the social media platform X, described his statement as profoundly significant. The group suggested that Nigerians might not encounter another opportunity to experience an Atiku presidency. They commented, "There is something deeply emotional about Atiku Abubakar saying he will not contest again if Nigerians reject him in 2027."
The ADC Vanguard further highlighted Atiku's extensive political journey, spanning several decades, during which he has repeatedly contested, faced losses, and returned to seek the highest office. The group posited that the 2027 election could signify "the final chapter of a political journey that has lasted most of Nigeria’s democratic era." They urged voters to carefully consider Atiku's vast experience and political reach, especially in light of Nigeria's current economic and security challenges. The ADC Vanguard concluded by stating that the 2027 election could be Atiku's "final chance" to be assessed on his potential performance in office rather than just campaign rhetoric and speculation, stressing that "If 2027 truly is his last attempt, then it should not be treated like just another election."
