Atiku Questions Obasanjo's Electoral Strength, Cites Arewa's Role in 1999 Victory

The presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has asserted that former President Olusegun Obasanjo possesses no significant political or electoral influence. This declaration comes amidst a long-standing strained relationship between the two political figures, which has persisted since their tenure as President and Vice President concluded in 2007, after serving two terms.
Atiku had previously disclosed that his opposition to Obasanjo's alleged third-term ambition was rooted in a commitment to safeguarding Nigeria's Constitution and democratic principles, rather than personal disloyalty. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, August 19, Atiku expressed indifference regarding Obasanjo's apparent refusal to endorse his political aspirations.
“In 1999, he could not even win his own state or the Southwest; it was Arewa that made him President. He possesses no electoral value,” Atiku stated, reiterating the point for emphasis.
Addressing the upcoming 2027 general elections, Atiku highlighted his record as Vice President, noting that he provided numerous young Nigerians with opportunities to serve within the government. He pointed out that many of these individuals now occupy prominent roles as governors, ministers, directors, and other vital positions. Atiku further pledged that if he were to become President, young Nigerians would continue to receive avenues for service and leadership.
