The forthcoming Osun State governorship election is set to be a crucial litmus test for the Independent National Electoral Commission's (INEC) ability to effectively implement the revised electoral guidelines. According to Professor Ernest Ereke, a renowned expert in Political Economy and Development at the University of Abuja, this election will provide valuable insights into the preparedness of INEC to enforce the new guidelines ahead of the 2027 general elections. Ereke noted that the Osun election has become highly contentious due to its significance as the last major off-cycle election before the general elections, and it will serve as a barometer for INEC's capacity to implement the revised electoral guidelines. He further stated that the election presents an opportunity to assess INEC's preparedness and the effectiveness of the new Electoral Act in administering elections. The professor cited a report indicating that 29 lives have been lost in 73 incidents of violence across Osun State, with Osogbo, the state capital, being the epicenter of electoral violence. He attributed the violence to various factors, including political issues, criminality, cultism, and lapses in election administration. Ereke emphasized that the election has become contentious because politicians view it as an opportunity to gain electoral advantage ahead of the 2027 general elections. He condemned all forms of vote buying and inducement, stressing that voters should be allowed to freely choose candidates based on their policies, programs, and competence. The professor also underscored the need for security agencies to restore public confidence by demonstrating their commitment to protecting all citizens, regardless of their political affiliation, before, during, and after the election.
