Mayor Zohran Mamdani's Fully Clothed Plunge Signals Start of NYC Pool Season

New York City's Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, made a memorable entrance on Saturday morning, June 27, by diving into an East Harlem public pool while still fully dressed in his suit. This unconventional splash marked the official commencement of the Big Apple’s summer outdoor swimming season at the Thomas Jefferson Pool.
The mayor joined numerous children for the celebratory plunge, intentionally disregarding established city regulations that mandate all individuals in the water must wear appropriate swimwear. Mamdani even retained his black socks as he executed a cannonball into the cool waters. The young swimmers present reportedly expressed considerable excitement over the mayor’s stunt, finding it entertaining to witness his dive and subsequent handshakes.
This act fulfilled a commitment Mamdani had made earlier in the year after journalists questioned him on whether he would revive an old, somewhat obscure mayoral tradition of jumping into public pools on opening day. The last city executive to engage in this practice was former Mayor Michael Bloomberg. His predecessors, Bill de Blasio and Eric Adams, both opted out during their tenures. Mamdani had initially hinted at the possibility in March before confirming his intentions just this week. A social media post from GrandMaster Lou (@WNWLouOfficial) on June 27, 2026, also captured the moment, highlighting the 90th anniversary of the WPA-era pools.
The mayor's fully clothed entry directly contravened strict New York City public pool guidelines. These rules are in place to help maintain optimal chemical levels in the water and stipulate that all swimmers must don proper bathing attire. Specifically, for male patrons, regulations require swim trunks to feature a mesh lining, although Speedos are also acceptable.
This is not the first instance of Mamdani entering the water in business attire. During his campaign last year, he participated in the annual Polar Bear Club Plunge at Coney Island, plunging into the waves while fully dressed. That particular event was reportedly a political maneuver tied to promises of a rent freeze.
