Akande, Abati Advocate Trust and Integrity for Nigerian Leaders

During the third induction ceremony of the Institute of Leadership, Coaching and Strategy in Lagos on Friday, Dr. Reuben Abati, a seasoned journalist and ex-presidential spokesman, alongside Dr. Onikepo Akande, who formerly served as Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, emphasized the critical need for leaders in all spheres to foster trust, uphold integrity, and dedicate themselves to service. They asserted that mere titles or official positions are insufficient to secure public confidence in contemporary times. The event saw new individuals officially inducted into the institute’s Fellow, Full Member, and Associate ranks.
In his keynote address, titled 'Leading with Influence in an Unstable World,' Dr. Abati highlighted that the current climate of global economic instability, rapid technological changes, political unrest, and societal issues has intensified the public's desire for leaders who can instill confidence and offer clear direction. He stressed that true leadership is cultivated through credibility, not simply bestowed by holding a particular office. Dr. Abati elaborated, stating, 'Authority can be conferred by appointment. Influence must be earned. Authority comes from position. Influence comes from credibility. Authority can compel obedience. Influence inspires commitment. Authority may force compliance. Influence wins trust.'
Dr. Abati further observed that during uncertain periods, individuals tend to gravitate towards leaders they trust, rather than those who simply hold public roles. He articulated, 'People do not follow titles when they are afraid. They follow those they trust. Leadership should never be viewed as an ornament. It is a calling. Influence begins not with position but with purpose.'
Also speaking at the gathering, Dr. Akande posited that leadership ought to be assessed based on integrity, credibility, and service, rather than by formal titles. She declared, 'Leadership is no longer about title or position. It is about influence. Influence is the currency of leadership. It is earned through integrity, sustained by credibility and multiplied through service.' Dr. Akande then called upon the newly inducted members to actively participate in addressing societal problems and to consistently maintain high levels of professionalism, transparency, and ethical conduct.
Earlier in the programme, Dr. Olasunkade Azeez, who serves as the President and Chairman of the institute's Governing Council, explained that the organization’s mission is to foster responsible leadership through rigorous research, dedicated advocacy, and comprehensive training. He asserted that Nigeria’s primary impediment to progress is not a scarcity of human or natural resources, but rather its persistent leadership deficits. Dr. Azeez concluded by stating, 'We have no business with poverty if we get our leadership right. We must work for a better and prosperous Nigeria with equity and fairness.'
