A Nigerian man has expressed his dismay and disappointment over a recent encounter he had during a marriage negotiation ceremony. He had accompanied his friend to the home of the lady his friend intended to marry, only to be told to wait for the lady's younger brother to arrive, despite her mother being present. This incident has sparked a heated debate about the role of women in Nigerian society, particularly in traditional settings. The man took to social media to express his frustration, stating, 'I don’t understand, her mother is right there and we have to wait for a 21-year-old boy?' He further emphasized that many of Nigeria's traditions are rooted in patriarchy and misogyny, pointing out the irony of a woman being capable of paying school fees, feeding, and clothing her children, yet being sidelined in important family decisions. As he so aptly put it, 'So a widow can pay school fees, feed and cloth but she can’t talk to the people that want to marry her daughter? Can you see how stupid that sounds?' This incident has shed light on the deep-seated patriarchal norms that still pervade Nigerian culture, sparking a necessary conversation about the need for greater inclusivity and gender equality.
