According to a recent survey by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), many Nigerian youths are putting off marriage due to economic and housing difficulties. The UNFPA's Nigeria Resident Representative, Muriel Mafiko, revealed this during the commemoration of the 2026 World Population Day. She noted that despite the desire of many young people to start their own families, they face numerous barriers, including unemployment, underemployment, rising living costs, and limited access to quality education and healthcare. Mafiko explained that these challenges can limit the choices available to young people and make it difficult for them to plan for their future with confidence. 'Our survey reveals that many young Nigerians want to get married and have children, but they are being held back by economic and housing constraints,' she said. The ideal family size for many young people is two children, but they are uncertain about their ability to provide for them. Mafiko emphasized that young people need a sense of security to plan for their future and that it is the responsibility of leaders to support their aspirations. She also highlighted the importance of investing in the youth, empowering them to innovate, and creating conditions that allow them to make real choices about their lives. The Chairman of the National Population Commission, Dr. Aminu Yusuf, noted that approximately 70 per cent of Nigeria's population is under the age of 30, presenting immense opportunities for innovation, productivity, and economic growth. However, he cautioned that a youthful population does not automatically translate into a demographic dividend, and that concerted efforts are needed to harness the potential of young people.
