Nigeria's Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has emphasized the crucial role of character in maintaining a successful marriage. Speaking at the wedding reception of Aishatu Buratai, daughter of former Chief of Army Staff Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, and her husband, Umar Zoru, Shettima noted that a strong marriage is built on the foundation of forgiveness, humility, and character, rather than physical beauty or wealth. He stressed that families are the backbone of national development and urged parents to instill lasting values in their children. The Vice President, who was the Special Guest of Honour at the event, also encouraged young couples to prioritize character and responsibility in their relationships. He described marriage as a pillar of faith and responsibility, stating that 'our faith describes marriage as half of religion, and I have always understood why.' Shettima further emphasized the importance of honesty, patience, and compassion in building a strong and enduring home. He commended the newly married couple and their families for promoting unity, respect, and service to the nation. The wedding reception, which was attended by dignitaries including traditional rulers, senior military officers, and government officials, featured cultural displays, musical performances, and goodwill messages. Shettima congratulated the couple and prayed for Allah's blessings upon their union, stating that 'affection alone cannot sustain a home. Beauty will change and fortunes may rise and fall. But character is what keeps two people standing beside each other when life tests their convictions.'
