In a significant development, Latvia's defence ministry has confirmed that NATO fighter jets have successfully intercepted and shot down a drone that had breached the country's airspace. This incident comes at a time when European nations are on high alert due to the increasing incidence of unauthorised drone activities, particularly in the backdrop of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. According to the defence ministry, the drone was detected as a result of Russian electromagnetic warfare and was promptly neutralised by the allied fighter jets, thereby ending the threat. Latvia, with a population of approximately 1.9 million people, shares a border with Russia to the east and has experienced numerous drone incursions in the past, similar to other countries along the alliance's Eastern flank. In a related development, Finland, a neighbouring country, has imposed temporary restrictions on aviation and maritime activities in the eastern Gulf of Finland as a precautionary measure to ensure safety and operational capabilities. Meanwhile, the governor of Russia's Leningrad region reported that air defences had shot down 54 Ukrainian drones, resulting in a fire outbreak at the Baltic Sea port of Ust-Luga. This is not an isolated incident, as French fighter jets had previously shot down a drone in Latvia, while German authorities discovered an explosives-laden drone at Leipzig airport, highlighting the growing concern over drone-related security threats.
