Canada Introduces Temporary Immigration Relief for Disaster-Hit Foreigners

In a bid to alleviate the suffering of foreign workers, students, and visitors affected by natural disasters in Canada, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has introduced a set of temporary special immigration measures. These measures, which will be in place from April 1, 2026, to November 30, 2028, are designed to provide assistance to individuals whose immigration status has been disrupted by disasters such as wildfires, storms, floods, hurricanes, and earthquakes. Eligible temporary residents will have up to six months to apply to restore their status, as opposed to the usual 90-day period. To benefit from these measures, affected individuals must have had valid temporary resident status as a worker, student, or visitor on the date of the disaster. Those applying to restore their status are required to submit a signed attestation explaining how the disaster affected them, along with the code 'NaturalDisaster2026' and supporting evidence where applicable. This may include proof of residence or temporary stay in the affected area, as well as details of their employer or designated learning institution. Students whose schools have closed due to a natural disaster can provide evidence such as a letter from the institution or a public notice confirming the closure, and may be considered to be on authorized leave. Such students can pause their studies without penalty and may continue working off-campus if their study permits allow it. The department has also provided a web form for applicants who require urgent processing, who can select 'Request Priority Processing for my existing application' and enter 'NaturalDisaster2026' to explain their situation. These special measures aim to give disaster-affected temporary residents additional time to regularize their immigration status while dealing with the aftermath of major natural disasters.
