Global Justice Under Threat as Chad and Venezuela Quit ICC

The International Criminal Court has expressed deep concern over the recent decision by Chad and Venezuela to withdraw their membership from the body. In a statement issued by the court's leadership, comprising representatives from Finland, Sierra Leone, and Poland, the presidency noted that the pursuit of justice is significantly strengthened when countries unite in their purpose. The withdrawals were announced by Venezuela on July 25 and Chad two days later, with both countries accusing the ICC of bias in its investigations. This development comes after the United States launched a diplomatic offensive against the court, accusing it of posing a threat to Americans and promising new sanctions while urging its partners to quit the ICC. The relationship between the ICC and the administration of President Donald Trump has been strained, with some judges already facing US sanctions. Chad has accused the ICC of focusing disproportionately on African countries, a sentiment echoed by Venezuela, which is currently under ICC investigation for alleged crimes against humanity committed during crackdowns on protesters since 2014. Venezuela's Foreign Minister Felix Plasencia stated, 'Venezuela considers that the Court's actions reflect a demonstrated geographical bias, which has disproportionately concentrated its work on African and Latin American countries.' The ICC, which tries individuals for the world's most serious crimes, including war crimes and crimes against humanity, is led by President Paivi Kaukoranta of Finland, with Michael Imran Kanu of Sierra Leone as vice-president and Margareta Kassangana of Poland. The withdrawals by Chad and Venezuela, and the potential exits by the military juntas ruling Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, pose significant challenges to the ICC's mandate and global justice.
