Canadian Citizenship Application: IRCC Warns Against Costly Errors

As the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) continues to process citizenship applications, the agency has issued a warning to applicants to be meticulous in their submissions. With the new citizenship by descent law in place, many individuals are preparing to apply for proof of Canadian citizenship, and IRCC is advising them to review their application packages carefully to avoid common pitfalls that could lead to delays. According to IRCC, one of the critical mistakes applicants make is submitting incomplete or incorrectly prepared applications, which may be returned. To avoid this, IRCC has updated its document checklist (CIT 0014), requiring applicants to provide supporting documents directly from the original issuing authorities, such as civil registries, vital statistics offices, or provincial archives. It is essential to note that applications cannot be supported solely by third-party records, such as documents obtained from genealogy platforms or similar sources. In cases where applicants are unable to obtain original records, they are advised to provide a written explanation and evidence of their efforts to secure the documents. Additionally, IRCC emphasizes the importance of submitting high-resolution, color photocopies of supporting documents, rather than original documents, unless explicitly requested. The agency also stresses the need for applicants to meet the citizenship photo requirements, including correct dimensions, a plain background, and required information on the back of the photographs. Furthermore, IRCC reminds applicants to complete all sections of the application forms, marking any non-applicable sections as 'N/A' rather than leaving them blank. It is also crucial for applicants to sign and date their forms correctly, using black ink, and ensuring the date is not more than 90 days old when received and not a future date. To ensure a smooth application process, IRCC encourages applicants to keep copies of all submitted documents and use courier or postal services with tracking options to confirm delivery. As of July 2026, proof of citizenship applications is taking approximately 19 months to process, making attention to detail even more critical.
